If you are a high-school student, gearing up for your college essay or looking for guidance and direction in your critical/analytical or creative writing, we will help you to become a more confident, fluent writer, able to express yourself effectively on paper in a way that genuinely reflects who you are.
The college essay is the lynchpin of your college application, your opportunity to make a singular impression on the admissions committee and set your application apart.
The key to a successful essay is the right topic—not just the subject you want to write about, but the point you want to make about it: call it your angle, theme, approach, or take on the subject. Your college professors will refer to this as “the argument.”
Whether you are tackling the “you” essay, the “why us?” essay, or the “creative” option, our tutors will help you to choose the right subject, discover your theme, and plan and shape your essay. Covering all the elements of a successful personal essay, from structure and tone to logic, rhetoric, and style, our tutors will guide you every step of the way. In the end, you will not only have composed a compelling college essay, you will have written the essay that could only have been written by you.
What’s more, having honed and embedded the entire suite of writing skills in the course of our work together, from grammar and punctuation to putting your voice into the words on the page, you will be equipped for all the writing you will do throughout your college career—and the rest of your life.
Are you a creative writer? Have you always wanted to try? Whatever your level, we will work with you on discovering and developing your talents in writing poetry, fiction, stage plays, screenplays, and creative nonfiction.
Our tutors will first of all teach you how to read as a writer, the sine qua non of mastering your craft. In our one-to-one sessions, we cover the gamut of techniques from inspiration to publication. Through a series of specific prompts and exercises, you will learn how to establish point of view, manage character development, negotiate form and structure, set a scene, handle dialogue, move your plot forward, muster rhetoric, control tone, modulate pace, and use imagery, metaphor, symbols. We will work with you on all the skills required to keep rewrites moving forward and new ideas flowing.
In addition to one-to-one tutoring we offer, where possible, small dedicated creative writing workshops.
